Since 2012, Anu has made use of applied research and evidence-based strategies to offer cross-sector training. Inclusant has designed customized equity interventions for Chatham University, Allegheny Conference on Community Development, The Midwife Center, The Sprout Fund, and Drusky Entertainment, to name just a few. “ My professional focus areas have been diversity, equity, and inclusion.
For a decade, I was a full-time college professor who taught courses in interdisciplinary subjects, worked on higher education diversity initiatives, and published original research, including a book-length study about the narrative of the American Dream as it impacts judgments about who belongs in the U.S.
In 2015, I became a small business owner when I founded the social enterprise Inclusant and began ‘teaching’ general audiences about race-ethnicity, gender and sexuality, and other types of differences. As principal consultant of Inclusant, I worked with 75+ local organizations to help them craft inclusion strategies suited to their particular needs.
As part of Inclusant’s work, I designed a new diversity leadership training series for the Pittsburgh region called “Creating Confluence,” in collaboration with the fantastic team of Lizzie Anderson (facilitator/therapist/activist), Leigh Solomon Pugliano (artist/social entrepreneur), and Monica Ruiz (Latinx community organizer).
In Fall of 2017, I pivoted to focus on translating my research and teaching experience into enabling transformative policy change, when I became the inaugural Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Gender Equity Commission in the Office of Mayor Peduto.“
